Elretur, a producer responsibility organisation (PRO), is once again increasing the number of containers, bringing the total close to 1,000. The investment improves logistics and strengthens efforts to recover even more electronic products from the waste stream for reuse. To deliver the new order of 130 containers, Elretur has once again selected the Danish company NIPA.
Elretur, a producer responsibility organisation (PRO) and part of Retur, manages extended producer responsibility for electronics on behalf of more than 1,300 Danish companies that manufacture, import or sell electronic products. This includes collecting end-of-life electronics and ensuring that as much as possible is reused, recycled or treated in an environmentally responsible way.
As Elretur handles more than 80% of electronic waste in Denmark – ranging from washing machines to mobile phones – this represents a significant logistical operation, involving a large number of containers.
In recent years, Elretur has invested in hundreds of containers and is now adding a further 130, bringing the total close to 1,000. This covers around 90% of demand, with the remaining share being leased.
“We gain several advantages from investing in more containers. Logistically, it gives us greater flexibility, as we can decide where containers are best deployed at any given time. It also allows us to better protect the electronics – for example, by making it easier to store equipment during peak periods. This leads to more efficient handling and creates the potential for even more reuse,” says Morten Harboe-Jepsen, CEO of Retur, of which Elretur is a part.
In 2025, Elretur, in collaboration with HJHansen Recycling, opened Denmark’s largest reuse facility for electronics, Electronic Reuse & Recycling, in Nørre Aaby on Funen. The facility processes 13,500 tonnes of small and medium-sized electronic waste annually.
In addition to increased logistical flexibility and improved protection of electronic products, the investment in containers also leads to better economics, as owning containers is more cost-effective in the long term than leasing them. Elretur therefore aims to own all containers within a few years and is now close to reaching that goal.
Strong satisfaction with supplier
Once again, the family-owned Danish company NIPA, based on Funen, has been selected to deliver the containers. NIPA has already supplied 550 containers to Elretur, and with the new order, the total number delivered will reach 680. Elretur expresses strong satisfaction with both the execution of the order and the collaboration with NIPA.
“We operate on behalf of more than 1,300 members who expect cost efficiency and streamlined processes. This means we place high demands on our partners and suppliers – demands that NIPA fully meets,” says Morten Harboe-Jepsen.
“We appreciate the trust that Elretur places in NIPA. We compete with large international container manufacturers, so this is a recognition of the efforts of everyone in the company. At the same time, we are proud that the containers are produced in Denmark, ensuring high quality and short lead times, as production takes place locally on Funen,” says Jesper Skytte, CEO of NIPA.
